As I watch the Michael Jackson Marathon on VH1 due to his recent death many thoughts come to mind - especially considering the fact that music and entertainment is my life.
The first thought is that Michael was such a great talent that even if he was still alive, chances are that if the marathon was on I would probably be watching it anyway.

Second, it's hard for me to be sad for anyone who dies that has lived most of their entire life doing what they were born to do and love the most.

Third it is hard for me to visualize a Michael Jackson at age 60, 70 or 80 years old because most gifted entertainers usually die much younger - living their entire lives pushing themselves way beyond their human capacities and as we approach the big 50 no matter who you are we all start feeling it.

As I watch the "King of Pop" in video after video spinning like a top, pop locking, kicking, shaking, twisting and turning executing his every move with human perfection I think about the countless hours of physical exertions required just to spend additional countless hours of filming thousands of scenes to absolute visual perfection not to mention preparing for recording sessions - countless hours in the studios both audio and video, countless hours preparing what results in the performance and everything else that it takes to be The Greatest. (Please refer to Muhammad Ali!)

Some people think of entertainers as people who get like the song says "Money for nothin' and the chicks for free!"

But even those of us who are busting our booties off to just barely make a living in this industry knows how demanding the life of an entertainer actually is and for someone that is considered to be the best of all time, even if you do everything that you are supposed to do (which most of us don't) this business alone can kill you.

The trade off is the euphoric state you experience every single time you accomplish something substantial - it's the best high one can ever experience - bar none. It's a combination of exhilaration, euphoria and in most cases exhaustion - which is sometimes as physically taxing as running marathons, triathlons or drugs.

Your external appearance can be deceptive because you feel it more and more the older you get - it gets harder and harder - no matter who you are or how well you take care of yourself, how good people take care of you whether you are rich or poor (money can help to slow aging but it ain't gonna stop it), or as Michael said "Black or White!"

It brings to mind the compliment "You really look good, FOR YOU AGE!"

No matter how you look at it, today 50 looks a whole lot better than it did in the "50's but it still means 1/2 a century has passed with you breathing on this planet and although thing may change, time is measured the same and Michael was 50 living most of his late years much more actively than his earlier ones when everybody did everything for him. And when you add al the other things he's been through it's a miracle he lasted this long.

The fortunate thing for us is that Michael is another one of those great life's experience that we can say that "we were there" to help make it happen.

I predict that for the next decade we will be blessed with music from Michael that has not be heard before and that his next CD (you can count on that) will out sell all others.
